Review of the Power Max TRX Ion Control Irons from GigaGolf

(as alternative to the TaylorMade® 2008 r7 CGB Max Irons)

Professional Golf Club Review of the Power Max TRX Ion Control Irons from GigaGolf as compared to the TaylorMade 2008 r7 CGB Max Irons

Manufacturer: Giga Golf

Model: Power Max TRX Ion Control Irons

Similar to: TaylorMade® 2008 r7 CGB Max Irons

Manufacturer's Description Details: The TRX Irons were created for the player who is looking for game improvement technology without sacrificing shot making capability. The TRX is equipped with much of the same technology that make GigaGolf game improvement irons easy and fun to play, but we built these game improvement features around a traditional design that allows the ball to be "worked" or "shaped" by players of all skill levels. The cavity is designed to achieve a significant perimeter weighting and the MOI is surprisingly high, so the irons are forgiving and long.

Our Review:

These new irons by GigaGolf are a clear winner in the 'looks' department, and they seem to underscore the new trend in golf club design that 'black is beautiful'.

Professional Golf Club Review of the Power Max TRX Ion Control Irons from GigaGolf as compared to the TaylorMade 2008 r7 CGB Max Irons The TRX Ion Control Irons are designed with a considerable offset (see the sample of a 5 iron on the right), ranging from 5.7mm for the 3 iron to 3.3mm for the 9 iron. This offset helps to further close the club face for just a split second longer before impact, which in turn induces a mild draw. This is good news for many (right handed) golfers who tend to slice or fade their balls to the right of the fairway. The club face itself is large, and the perimeter weighting allows for off-center hits to still reach the fairway.

During our test we compared the TRX Ion Control Irons with other (branded) irons side-by-side, and our testers agreed that the TRX are not only very forgiving on mis-hits, but they launch the ball at a rather high trajectory while still giving it some substantial carry. We assume that the coin-sized 'power pad' on the back of the club face helps to propel the ball higher by giving it some extra 'ump'.

One characteristic we particularly liked was the ease of shaping different shots with these irons. It takes almost no effort to induce a controlled draw or fade, or to manipulate the launch angle. The TRX irons are very responsive, in fact they have one of the highest playability scores of all irons we have tested. Combined with the other features mentioned above we think that theses irons are very well suited for both beginners and intermediate players.

The Power Max TRX Ion Control Irons start from US$179 (inclusive of custom fitting and free shipping within the continental US) as compared to US$1100+ for the TaylorMade® 2008 r7 CGB Max Irons, so we have no hesitation to recommend them as great value for money.

Likes: Great looks and playability; very 'workable' irons.

Dislikes: Not available in LH.
