Review of the Ping Clone 'C9 VFT Composite Driver' from GigaGolf

Manufacturer: Giga Golf

Model: GigaGolf C9 VFT Composite Driver

Compares to: Ping® Rapture Irons

Manufacturer's Description Details: Simple understated design conceals core technologies that make the C9 an exciting new introduction. A variable thickness face is milled to expand the sweet spot making this an excellent choice for the player that does not have time to practice often. Beta 5-3-3-3 Ti is cut from the crown and filled with an advanced carbon fiber that allows weight to be redistributed to the sole creating a trajectory that optimizes spin rates on today's high performance balls. Titanium crown structure gives added support and reduces distance loss due to crown deflection. The titanium support also creates a solid impact sound that is sometime missing from other composite crown drivers.

Our Review:

What makes it technologically outstanding is that some of the titanium from the top of the club head (the crown) has been replaced with a lighter carbon fibre composite. The weight that was saved there was then relocated towards the rear bottom of the club head. This lowered the overall center of gravity for the club, and also reduced the twisting of the club head when it hits the golf ball.

The result of this high tech approach is a sweet spot that covers virtually the whole club face, and an increase in swing speed due to the lower center of gravity. Add to this the specially constructed titanium face (the face is thicker in the center and gets thinner towards the sides) and you have a superior combination for great distance and surprising accuracy.

The GigaGolf C9 VFT Composite Driver is a beautifully looking, traditionally shaped club. The sound of a good hit is solid but slightly more subdued compared to an all-titanium driver.

Given the technological advances this is clearly a premium club, hence it is slightly more expensive than most other Gigagolf clubs. However, we think at $109.00 it is undoubtedly great value for money.

Likes: Great playability; very forgiving yet superior distance.

Dislikes: Not available in LH.

Reader's feedback and comments

I bought the C9 driver about a month ago and thought I share my experience so far. The club is well put together, top quality especially for the price. The driver is just massive yet easy to handle. Mine has the ProForce 65 shaft, and it gives superior distance off the tee. I'm now ready to get the 3 wood as well.
